Ripple (XRP) market overview
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger. An XRP perpetual futures contract gives exposure to XRP prices without creating an XRP Ledger balance. A contract position does not let you send XRP payments from a crypto wallet.
Ledger costs differ from venue fees
The XRP Ledger token documentation distinguishes XRP from tokens issued on the ledger. XRP pays network transaction costs and supports account reserve requirements. These functions concern the ledger account, rather than an XRP contract on a separate venue.
The transaction cost documentation explains that the ledger destroys the XRP used for a transaction fee. The payment does not go to a network participant or exchange. A venue's trading fee and funding payment follow separate rules.
The ledger also requires an XRP reserve to maintain an account. Reserve settings can change through the network's voting process. A venue's required margin serves a different purpose: it supports the leveraged position.
What XRP open interest can show
Open interest reports the value of outstanding XRP contracts within the available feeds. It does not identify account owners, count ledger payments, or show why traders opened their positions. A change around a news event does not establish that the event caused the change.
