Funding payment formula

Each venue quotes a rate for its own funding interval of 1, 4 or 8 hours. At each settlement, a long pays the rate times the position value when the rate is positive, and a short receives it. When the rate is negative, the short pays and the long receives.

Funding = position value × rate per interval × (holding hours ÷ interval hours)

The calculator uses the interval of each venue, so a 1-hour rate is applied 24 times a day and an 8-hour rate 3 times. A holding time that is not a whole number of intervals gives an expected value. For example, 10 hours at an 8-hour interval counts as 1.25 settlements. The real position pays at 1 or 2 settlements, depending on when you open it. For some venues the sweep reads a rate that is already scaled to an assumed interval. The table marks them. For those venues, the total is correct, but the amount per settlement can differ.

The result is an estimate. Venues reset the rate at each interval, and the exact number of settlements depends on the time you open and close. Read the funding methodology for the sweep. Compare all assets in the funding rate screener.

The asset list has 50 markets: BTC and ETH from the sweep, and the other markets with the most open interest from the live funding matrix. Pick Other market to load any symbol that the matrix lists. A venue enters only when it reports the interval for that market, or when its documentation states one interval for every market.

Terms used on this page

Funding rate
A funding rate is the periodic payment between long and short positions that keeps a perpetual futures price near its index price. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts.
Funding interval
The funding interval is the time between two funding settlements on one market, for example 1 hour or 8 hours. A rate always belongs to its interval.
