How Hyperliquid liquidates a position
- The maintenance margin is half of the initial margin at the maximum leverage of the asset. That is 1.25% for a 40x asset and 16.7% for a 3x asset. Source, checked 2026-09-25.
- Large positions use margin tiers. Each tier has its own rate and a deduction, so the maintenance margin does not jump at a tier edge. Source, checked 2026-09-25.
- Liquidation uses the mark price. The mark price combines prices from external exchanges with the Hyperliquid order book, so it can differ from the last trade. Source, checked 2026-09-25.
- For a liquidated position above 100,000 USDC, Hyperliquid first sends 20% of the position to the order book. A 30-second cooldown follows. Source, checked 2026-09-25.
- If the equity falls below two thirds of the maintenance margin, the liquidator vault takes over the position. You do not get the maintenance margin back in that case. Source, checked 2026-09-25.

liq_price = price − side × margin_available ÷ position_size ÷ (1 − l × side)
Here, side is 1 for a long and −1 for a short, and l is the maintenance rate. The margin available is the isolated margin minus the maintenance margin. Use the liquidation price on the Hyperliquid position screen as the final value.
