Why Solana for perps

Solana block times run under 400 milliseconds. Transaction fees are measured in fractions of a cent. Those two properties matter differently for perp traders than they do for DeFi users generally.

For perps, the relevant numbers are: how fast does a stop-loss or take-profit execute, and what does it cost to adjust a position mid-trade? On Ethereum L2s like Arbitrum, the answer is 250ms-1 second and $0.05-$0.20 per transaction. On Solana, it is under 400ms and under $0.001. The difference is meaningful for active traders managing positions in real time.

PerpFinder tracks four Solana perp venues: Jupiter Perps, Drift Protocol, Zeta Markets, and Orderly Network (which spans 17 chains including Solana). The table ranks them by overall rating, since taker fees alone do not capture the liquidity and execution quality differences between pool-based and order-book-based models.

How the top two venues differ

Jupiter Perps rates 8.3/10 overall. It uses a pool model: the JLP pool holds SOL, BTC, ETH, USDC, and USDT, and acts as counterparty to all trades at the Pyth oracle price. Zero slippage regardless of position size, because you are not hitting a book. The tradeoff is limited market selection — around 10 pairs — and borrow fees that add to the 6 bps taker base rate on held positions. JLP TVL sits near $1.3 billion, giving it by far the deepest liquidity of any Solana perp venue.

Drift Protocol rates 8.0/10 and has been on Solana since November 2021 — the chain's oldest perp DEX. Drift runs a JIT auction model: when you submit a market order, market makers get a 200ms window to fill at or better than the current price before the vAMM backstop activates. Taker fees are 3.5 bps, below Jupiter's 6 bps. Drift also offers lending, spot margin, and BET prediction markets from the same account. Maximum leverage is 20x, the lowest cap of any major Solana venue.

What the table does not show: the Solana chain risk

Solana has experienced documented network outages since 2021. Solana's official status page logs these incidents. During a network halt, open perp positions cannot be managed. Stop-losses do not execute. Margin calls cannot be met. This risk does not exist on Hyperliquid's own L1 or the dYdX Chain. Solana's stability has improved materially since 2023, but the risk profile differs from Ethereum-based chains.

PerpFinder observed Solana network performance throughout early 2026 with no major halts during that period. The chain has improved since the high-congestion periods of 2021-2022.

Pick Solana perp venues if...

You already hold assets in Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack. The onboarding path is one step: connect wallet, deposit, trade. No bridge transaction, no wrapped token, no chain switching. For Solana-native DeFi users, this convenience is real.

You want the deepest available liquidity for BTC, ETH, or SOL on a non-Hyperliquid venue. Jupiter Perps' $1.3B JLP pool can fill sizes that most mid-tier perp DEXes cannot absorb without slippage.

Skip this page if...

You trade altcoins that are not in the top 10 by market cap. Jupiter Perps covers around 10 pairs. Drift covers 40+. Neither approaches Hyperliquid's 150+ or dYdX's 180+. For long-tail altcoin perps, the Solana-specific venues are not the right choice.

You need leverage above 50x. The highest Solana venue cap is Jupiter at 100x, but Drift caps at 20x. If maximum leverage is your primary need, see the high-leverage page for the full comparison. Use the cost comparison tool to model total trade cost on Solana venues versus Arbitrum and Hyperliquid alternatives.
